The Coronavirus outbreak has forced many to work from home. This can be a challenge, but what happens if you AND your significant other need to work from home at the same time?

That seems even more challenging, right?

After working remotely with my wife for the past four years, here are the most important lessons I’ve learned. I hope this helps you make remote work…work.

1.) Be prepared for emergency toilet paper restocking sessions

Expect to periodically hear — “Hey! I ran out of toilet paper. Can you please bring me some?”

2.) It’s okay to NOT talk to each other most of the day

But it’s also okay to say “hi” periodically as well. That’s a good idea too :)

3.) The best desk space goes quickly

Depending on where you live, there may be an endless struggle for the “prime” work spots in your house or apartment. Be prepared for the constant struggle.

4.) When on a video call, if there’s a knock on the door, it’s usually important and you shouldn’t ignore it

For example, “I’m making a quick trip to Starbucks, do you want anything?” or “I’m making lunch, have you had it already?”

5.) If headphones are on, assume that the other person is on a video call

You could save yourself potential embarrassment. Like this story for example. Or this one:

6.) Only you can prevent the other from constantly raiding the fridge and snack drawer

Be like Smokey the Bear

7.) If you have children at home, be prepared for anything

8.) Don’t play your favorite music too loud

A little background music can help you be more productive, but it’s highly unlikely that your musical styles will align. Consider buying a nice set of headphones instead.

9.) Everything is a negotiation

“Hey, can you go pick up the kiddo at daycare today? I’ll go to the grocery store later and replenish LaCroix if you do. please please please.”

10.) “The dishes won’t wash themselves”

Do your part. Clean up the crumbs on the counter after lunch. Put the coffee cups in the dishwasher.

In conclusion

Remote work with your significant other can be a challenge. But if you follow this advice, everything will be fine.

In all seriousness, it’s pretty cool to work remotely with someone you love.
